'The Dark Knight Rises' Again At Box Office!

'The Dark Knight Rises' Again At Box Office!

In the wake of the tragic movie theater shootings in Aurora, Colo., The Dark Knight Rises has continued to perform well at the box office, taking the number one spot as expected in its second weekend with $64.075 million (against a 60% drop)and a 10 day North American total of $289.086 million. However, like all of the other films in the marketplace it took a fairly big hit with the first weekend of Olympic coverage taking a bite out of the box office.

As comparison, 2008's The Dark Knight took a 53% drop in its second weekend with a gross of $75.17 million and a 10 day cumulative gross of $313.8 million. IMAX continues to add to the bottom line with $9 million plus giant screen dollars this weekend and $38 million to date since the trilogy-ender's North American debut.
Twentieth Century Fox’s Ice Age: Continental Drift  drifts into its third weekend after continuing to make a huge splash overseas and enters its second weekend with nearly $100 million in North America and a worldwide tally of nearly $540 million! The 3-D family animated release should continue to provide a nice family alternative to more adult-oriented films in the marketplace. A gross of $13.3 million this weekend has boosted its fortunes to nearly $115 million in N. America by Sunday night. GLOBAL UPDATE:Ice Age 4 drifted past $500m this weekend. Bolstered by excellent openings in China, Korea and India, the film made $49.4m for the weekend taking the cume to a cool $514.1m.
Debuting this weekend is The Watch from Twentieth Century Fox, starring Ben StillerVince Vaughn, andJonah Hill. This sci-fi comedy follows a group of dads who form a neighborhood watch committee to break up their monotonous daily routine, but unexpectedly find themselves defending the Earth from an alien invasion. Opening in 3,168 theaters, the R-rated comedy wound up with a $13 million gross this weekend.
Lionsgate's release of Summit Entertainment’s Step Up Revolution in 3-D also danced its way onto screens this weekend in 2,657 theaters. This is the fourth installment in the Step Up film series; the original film, released in 2006, starred Channing Tatum, had an opening weekend take of $20.6 million, and went on to earn $65.3 million. The unexpected success of that film spawned three sequels (including the latest film) with 2008’s Step Up 2 The Streets opening with $18.9 million and 2010’s Step Up 3-D making a $15.8 million splash in its debut. This PG-13 rated story of a young woman who lands in Miami with dreams of becoming a professional dancer debuted with a little under $12 million this weekend.
Universal’s comedy smash Ted generated $7.3 million this weekend while Sony’s The Amazing Spider-Man reboot starring Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone entered its fourth weekend with well over $600 million in worldwide web-slinging dollars and grabbed another $6.8 million this weekend. Global update: THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN grossed an estimated $12.2 million in 86 markets this weekend, bringing the overseas cume to $412.7 million and our worldwide total to $654.8 million.

Unfortunately this was a very slow weekend at the box office, but help is on the way with Sony's sci-fi re-boot of Total Recall and Fox's kid-friendly Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days opening this Friday.

Kareena Kapoor to endorse i-Ball phones?

Kareena Kapoor to endorse i-Ball phones?

If there's anyone who can very correctly justify the term 'Been there, Done that', then, it has to be the one and only Kareena Kapoor, who is on a roll.

Bollywood Hungama's reliable sources say that, after having endorsed practically all the brands under the sun, Kareena Kapoor will now be seen as the brand ambassador of i-Ball phones. Our sources also added that the shoot of the same is being scheduled for tomorrow.

The official announcement of the same, however, is being awaited.

Ranbir pleads guilty to smoking charges levied on him

Ranbir pleads guilty to smoking charges levied on him

It may be recalled that a while ago actor Ranbir Kapoor was issued a summon by a local court in Udaipur for smoking in public during the shoot of his film Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani

At the hearing which was held yesterday, Ranbir was not physically present, but was represented by his lawyer K.K.Purohit who pleaded guilty to the charges levied on his client. Purohit said that it was a mistake committed unknowingly by his client and assured that such an act wouldn't be repeated again. Purohit also sought exemption for Kapoor's absence at the hearing.

Aamir postpones Dhoom 3 shoot for sister's birthday

Aamir postpones Dhoom 3 shoot for sister's birthday

Aamir Khan has had the busiest year ever. Known for doing one project at a time, this is first time in his career that he has been juggling his magnanimous TV show Satyamev Jayate, release of Talaash and shooting of Dhoom 3, all going on together.

In fact Aamir was scheduled to leave for Chicago to shoot for Dhoom 3 on the night of August 3. With Raksha Bandhan coming up, his initial plan was to celebrate the festival on August 2 and leave the next day.

However, it turned out that Aamir's his entire family had planned a lavish party on August 3 to celebrate the 50th birthday of his sister Nikhat. When Aamir heard about the party, he requested Victor (director of Dhoom 3) and Aditya Chopra if he could leave for the US a day later. On his part, Aamir didn't want to disrupt the shooting schedule.

Victor and Aditya however were more than accommodating and felt Aamir could join the team later on August 6, without any issues.

Big B gears up for KBC Season 6

Big B gears up for KBC Season 6.

This news will sound as music to those ears and eyes that are habituated to getting glued to the TV sets when the clock strikes 9 in the night. We are indeed referring to the game show 'Kaun Banega Crorepati' (KBC). The good news is that the makers of the show that features the legendary Amitabh Bachchan are back with sixth season that's most likely to start in September.

This time, the makers have announced 'Sirf Gyaan Hi Aapko Aapka Haq Dila Sakta Hai' as the communication theme. Talking about the show, Danish Khan, Senior Vice President & Marketing head, SET, said that the challenge was how they should take the philosophy to the next level. He added that they came up with 'Gyaan...' theme because it is a great factor to empower people. And while commenting on Big B, he said that there is nobody like him and that his appeal transcends across all age groups. He also added that Big B can relate and connect with people of all backgrounds and his command over the language - both Hindi, English and many other local languages, his humility and sincerity are the factors that drive his popularity.

Deepika wants Ranbir back?

The success of Cocktail has left Ms. Dee flying high and happy. And of course, her much talked about 'patch-up' with Ranbir Kapoor (on the sets of Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani) has her grinning from ear-to-ear.
Recently, while chatting with zoOm, she made a candid confession about wanting Ranbir back. On screen that is. "If I were Imtiaz Ali, I'd cast Ranbir and Deepika for my next romantic film," she revealed. Wow Dee, is this just a wish or a proposal already? Whatever it is, we must say this is one helluva heady mix. What say?

Sunny Leone in Mumbai to promote Jism 2

American porn actress Sunny Leone, who is playing the role of a seductress in Jism 2, arrived in Mumbai early this morning to promote her first Bollywood film.
The film also stars ctors Randeep Hooda and Arunoday Singh as the male leads.
On her arrival, Leone said she wanted everybody to watch Jism 2, and predicted that everyone would love it.
"I was probably just as shocked as everybody else was to see the promos, to see how sexy it was and to see how the movie is coming together, you don't know what you are going to look like until the finished product, so watching the little bits and pieces, I haven't seen the movie either. So I am excited to see it," said Leone.
According to media reports, the film's director, Pooja Bhatt, has said she believes in boldness and not just a slapstick or toilet humour.
Appreciating her co-stars hard work, Leone said she enjoyed being the centre of attraction, but her co-actors have put in a lot of effort in playing their characters in the film, and therefore, they also needed the same attention and appreciation.
"I played Izna in the movie, a truly complex character trying to struggle with her past and present life. Her past is Randeep (Randeep Hooda) and her future is possibly Arun (Arunoday Singh). So, you guys will love to see what happens," said Leone.
The film is a sequel to the 2003 super hit film, Jism that featured Bipasha Basu and John Abraham.
The album of the film has soulful tracks composed by Arko Pravo Mukherjee, Mithoon and the Pakistani band Rushk.
The movie will hit the silver screens on August 3.

Apple iOS 6 preview: First Look

Introduction

As expected, Apple used the keynote of its annual WWDC event in San Francisco to announce the latest version of their iOS mobile platform. The sixth major build of the OS aims to bring the user experience to the next level with no less than 200 new features, services and UI tweaks.

The number is certainly huge, but then again so were the expectations of the millions of Apple fans around the globe. The fact that iOS 6 will only go official in three months' time heaps even more pressure on the latest release of the platform. By that point Android will probably have Jelly Bean to chew on, while Windows Phone will have released the multi-core friendly Apollo.
The iOS 6 key features include a Siri upgrade, system-wide Facebook integration and brand new Maps with turn-by-turn voice navigation. There're plenty of lesser new goodies such as achievements in the Game Center, new App store UI and the Music app, improved Safari with full-screen mode, better Mail, etc.
The complete changelog is coming up, but first we'll get the issue of compatibility out of the way. iOS 6 is compatible with the three latest iPhone generations (3GS, 4 and 4S), iPad 2 and 3 and the fourth-gen iPod Touch. The first iPad is not on the list, so if you are still holding on to the original Apple slate, you might finally want to consider an upgrade.
A few other restrictions apply, too: the iPhone 4S has finally lost its Siri exclusivity, but it's only going to share it with the iPad 3. The turn-by-turn navigation and the Flyover mode in Maps can be used only on dual-core iDevices - iPhone 4S, iPad 2 and iPad 3.
Now let's not waste any more time and get down to testing. We installed the beta release on an iPhone 4S, so all impressions of the OS are based on its performance. If you have an older-gen Apple smartphone your mileage may vary.

What's new in iOS 6?

As we already mentioned, Apple claims there are more than 200 new features in the iOS 6. We are sure the number is right, but not all of the changes are actually visible or even worth mentioning.

Here is what we believe to be a detailed list of all noteworthy updates brought by iOS 6:
  • Siri available on iPad 3
  • Siri now speaks Canadian English, Spanish (Spain/Mexico), Italian, Italian (Switzerland), Korean, Mandarin (Chinese/Taiwan), Cantonese (Hong Kong)
  • Siri can now provide sports scores, movie and restaurants reviews. It can launch apps and do status updates
  • Apple promises Siri integration with car handsfree systems
  • System-wide Facebook integration: Facebook contacts and events appear in the phonebook and calendar
  • Notification center gets quick Facebook/Twitter update keys
  • New Maps app with TomTom data, turn-by-turn voice navigation and 3D/Flyover view mode
  • Better Safari browser with iCloud tabs, full-screen mode, offline reading and faster performance
  • Passbook e-ticket app handles loyalty coupons, boarding passes, tickets
  • The Photo app can share photos with other iOS users. Likes and comments are supported
  • Updated Mail with VIP and Flagged mailboxes
  • Unified FaceTime/iMessages ID. FaceTime works over the cellular network
  • New UI for the App Store, iTunes Store, iBooks Store, Music, Weather apps
  • You can set songs from your music library as alarm tones
  • Better privacy settings
  • New accessibility options and guided access (single-app mode for kids)
  • Re-organized settings, various new icons
  • Improved HDR camera function
  • Game Center now supports challenges (achievements)
  • Reject call with SMS
  • Do Not Disturb mode
  • Lost mode
  • Improved keyboards and auto-correction
  • Three new wallpapers
  • Various improvements under the hood
  • Display brightness settings menu has been changed
A long list it certainly is, but Apple got where they are with quality, not quantity. The iOS 6 may not exactly be 200 steps in the right direction but all those novelties promise to make a difference.

The three new wallpapers
And of course, there are plenty of features we would have liked to see on the list. It's just not in Apple's nature to respond to wishes and requests. What the company prefers to do instead is take the user experience along new paths - even ones you have never thought of.

Multilingual Siri knows more

The first and most important news about Siri is iPad 3 support. So, it's no longer exclusive to iPhone 4S but this is not quite what iPhone 4 owners wanted to hear.
Siri speaks new languages too: Canadian English and French, Spanish, Italian, the varieties of German, Italian and French spoken in Switzerland, Korean, Mandarin, Cantonese. These are also supported in the satnav app.

Support for POI search is supposed to get wider. Assistance with restaurant booking is part of Siri's new set of skills. It will find you exactly the restaurant you are looking for and filter the results based on user reviews. You can run impressively detailed searches based on food type, location, outdoor, pool, price range, ratings, etc. This feature is not available in every country, though.

Siri knows about restaurants
One of the much-touted features is Siri's new-found flair for sports. It can answer lots of questions and isn't limited to game scores. History, stats, player bios, player comparison, teams, records, etc. Siri should be able to return most of the info right onto its own screen, without switching over to the browser.

Asking Siri about sports
The same applies to movies. You will get all of your movie-related answers right inside the Siri window - anything about actors, directors, awards, movie stats, premieres and tickets, reviews, trailers, etc.

Siri knows movies too
The other new thing Siri can do is launch apps. Yes, it does look like one of those features that should have been there from the beginning, but better late than never, right? You can also have Siri update your Facebook and Twitter.

Siri can launch apps, update Facebook and Twitter
Apple announced they're working with various car manufacturers - BMW, GM, Mercedes, Land Rover, Jaguar, Audi, Toyota, Chrysler, Honda and others - to integrate Siri tightly with the car's audio systems.

The Facebook integration comes a year too late

When the iOS 5 was about to launch many people were hoping for Facebook integration. Instead Apple gave us Twitter.
A year later, Facebook is tightly integrated with the iOS. It even goes deeper than Twitter did in iOS 5.

Configuring the Facebook integration
We already pointed out that Siri can do your status updates for you. There are dedicated shortcuts for Facebook and Twitter updates in the Notification center as well.

You can update your social statuses from the Notification Center
This is just the beginning though. Just like in Android you can sync your Facebook contacts with the phonebook. If you do, the system will search email and phone numbers, so it can link your contacts with their Facebook profiles.

Upon a successful Facebook link, the contact's picture, addresses, important dates, emails, phone numbers and websites will be updated. You will also get a new Facebook field with a shortcut to the contact's Facebook profile. It will load in the Safari browser, not the dedicated Facebook app.
Unfortunately, the Facebook albums and feeds do not appear in the phonebook. All Facebook events will appear in the Calendar though.
You can share photos on Facebook right inside the Photo app. Addresses can be shared as well upon a drop of a pin in Maps.

Facebook integration extends to the App Store and the iTunes Store. Whenever you tap on an app, song, movie, TV show, etc. you'll get into the new store UI where there are three tabs - info, reviews and related. In review you can Like the app/song/…/movie on Facebook and write or read Facebook reviews.

Quad-core shootout: Four of a kind

Buckle up people, because this is going to get rough. When the world's four most powerful smartphones are about to go ballistic, it is the right time to take this website's name literally. The stage is set for the four titans of the Android world: the Samsung Galaxy S III, the HTC One X, the Meizu MX 4-core and the LG Optimus 4X HD. The four horsemen of the apocalypse to anyone unfortunate enough to be their competition.

We've seen and tested them all, and even had two of them in a thrilling head to head. This time around though, we have the full set. For an even more exciting twist, there's a cocky upstart against the Android establishment. And they're all after the ultimate prize.
With great power comes great responsibility and these phones not only represent themselves and their manufacturers. It's a battle of the chipsets too. Inside the Samsung Galaxy S III and Meizu MX Quad Core beats the same Exynos 4212 Quad chipset, while the HTC One X and the LG Optimus 4X HD are powered by the Nvidia Tegra 3 with not four, but five cores (an extra underclocked, power-saving core).
So, in the end this not only an individual challenge but in a way a team competition as well. And there is room for only one winner. Here's what we'll be throwing at the quad-core contenders in this epic shootout.
We'll begin with a general overview of the user interface of each of the smartphones to get a sense of their personality. And that's just a mild warm-up before a series of benchmarks and stress tests. This isn't just about what the two different chipset architectures are capable of, but also whether these droids make the most of them.
We'll be testing processors, graphics and web browsers, in search of the ultimate Android phone of the season. Stills and Full-HD video are also on the list. With an all-in mentality, these smartphones are great cameraphones too. So, we'll be looking at how they perform and, ultimately, which one gets on top.
Anything else? Sure. Some display and battery scores will be thrown in the mix to see how those handle everyday smartphone tasks. Processing power is important, but don't tell the whole story.
So, there we are. Four great phones and only one goal - outrun and outsmart. Money is no object here. We are dealt with a four-of-a-kind and we're going to play it. Let the tests begin.

Screen comparison

Even though this article is centered around the premise of comparing phones with quad-core processors, the screen is almost as important - what would be the use of all that computing power if the screen is going to limit what you can do.
Three phones seem to have roughly similar screens (4.7"-4.8" big, 720p resolution) and it's only the Meizu MX 4-core that stands out with its more compact, lower-res screen. We'll summarize the various specs of each screen in a table and try to hash things out.
The difference between 4.7" and 4.8" isn't that big - it only offers around 4% more viewing area and it only leads to a minimal drop in pixel density. The three big screened phones all have 300+ ppi pixel density (qualifying them for the unofficial "Retina" label), but the Meizu MX 4-core is a bit below that mark.
The difference in sharpness is only there if you look really closely, though. If you keep the smartphones a few inches away from your face, you might see some jagginess on the MX 4-core screen, but it's not something you'll notice in daily operation.
The Samsung Galaxy S III uses a Super AMOLED screen with a PenTile matrix, so it only has two thirds of the subpixels of the other two 720p screens. So, even though it technically has a high pixel density, jagginess and a cross-hatch pattern might appear, but again you'd need to be looking from way closer than what permits comfortable usage.
The Meizu does lose points for its iPhonish 3:2 aspect ratio - it fits neither 4:3 photos nor 16:9 videos without letterboxing, making the usable area of the already small (relatively speaking) screen even tinier.
Our bezel measurement isn't perfectly accurate (the shape of the phones is rounded and we estimated the area using rectangles), but it shows what you can probably see from photos of the four phones - there's a lot of bezel above and below the Meizu's screen, while the LG wastes only a minimal area on its front for bezel.
As for protection, the big-screen phones rely on Corning's Gorilla Glass, while the Meizu lacks toughened glass to guard its display. The Galaxy S III stands out here with Gorilla Glass 2, which Corning describes as 20% thinner but just as tough as the first version.
So far so good, but these specs don't tell us much about how the screens look. For example, the Galaxy S III has a Super AMOLED screen with excellent black levels, but the LCDs on the other three are brighter.
Here's the table that summarizes our results from tests we've performed on the screens.

Contrast (sunlight)

The Galaxy S III (expectedly) impresses with perfect blacks and contrast, but it's the contrast in bright sunlight that stands out the most - even though it's not very bright, the reflectivity of the screen is very low and offers much better sunlight legibility than the rest.
The HTC One X can't match the dark blacks of the S III, but its contrast is still very good - some of the best we've seen from LCDs (though not the best),. Sunlight legibility is above average, but not as good as on the Super AMOLED either.
The LG Optimus 4X HD's screen has the distinction of being the brightest of the bunch - while it's not the brightest LCD we've seen (even from LG themselves), 750 nits are plenty. Sadly, that couldn't help its sunlight legibility too much, but if there's no direct sunlight hitting the screen, the 4X HD screen offers pretty image quality.
The Meizu MX 4-core has a screen that has the worst black levels of the four, while offering not much more brightness than the dimmest LCD here (the One X screen). As a result, the contrast isn't good even under ideal conditions and it only gets worse under sunlight.
There's a bit more that can't be put in a table. The Meizu MX 4-core screen has noticeable contrast degradation when you look at it at an angle, plus there's some color shifting.
The screen on the LG Optimus 4X HD maintains its contrast regardless of viewing angle, although the colors shift when you view it in certain angles.
The HTC One X has neither of those issues, plus it has that desirable laminated feel where the image appear as if painted on the surface of the screen.
The Samsung Galaxy S III doesn't suffer from contrast degradation, but there is some bluish tint appearing at an angle (typical for AMOLEDs). It also has the makings of the laminated look, but the One X does it better.
In the end we have to split things into two groups. Some love the deep blacks and vibrant colors that AMOLED screen enjoy, so the Galaxy S III would be perfect for them. And let's not forget its excellent sunlight legibility.
Members of the other camp are not willing to sacrifice brightness and subpixel count, so they stick with LCDs - they'll love the HTC One X. It offers excellent contrast and viewing angles, the coveted laminated look and pretty decent sunlight legibility.
The LG Optimus 4X isn't far behind either - offering the same level of sharpness and even higher brightness, its True HD-IPS LCD is quite nice to look at. Not to mention that it's mounted on the most compact body of the three larger screens, which is an achievement on its own.
If we had to criticize a screen, it would be the one on the Meizu MX 4-core - it's not properly protected, has a aspect ratio that's not ideal for neither photo nor video watching and the viewing experience just can't match that of the other three. It's not a bad screen at all, but it's not exactly flagship material.

2011 Xperias won't get Jelly Bean, no ICS for Optimus 2X and Black

Every time Google announces a new version of its Android mobile OS, every droid user out there starts asking - will my smartphone get it? Well, we have some bad news for Sony Ericsson phones regarding Android 4.1 Jelly Bean and worse still - LG cancelled the ICS update for two of its phones.
Sony (actually, Sony Ericsson at the time) made sure to announce early on that its 2011 Xperia lineup will be updated to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich (even if the company wasn't so quick to actually deliver the updates). And now is has revealed that the Xperia arc S and Xperia mini pro won't be getting Jelly Bean.

This is coming from John Cooper, UK Product Manager for Sony Mobile, and while he didn’t say anything about other models, they all use the same chipset (with the arc S using an overclocked version). This means it's more than likely that the entire 2011 lineup will be missing out on the Android 4.1 JB fun.
As for the 2012 Xperia phones, Cooper says they're still reviewing which handsets are "the best for the Jelly Bean update" and promised Sony will announce its decision on Facebook once it figures it out.
No Jelly Bean sounds rough, but LG Canada had some worse news for some of its users - no Ice Cream Sandwich update for the LG Optimus 2X and Optimus Black. The LG Optimus 2X was expected to get Ice Cream Sandwich in Q2 but got delayed to Q3 and the Optimus Black was originally scheduled for Q3.
@PaddyJJ16 The Optimus 2X will not be receiving the ICS upgrade. The original upgrade announcement was a general statement issued from HQ.Wed Jul 25 21:33:25 via Twitter for Mac

@Peter_Soi The Optimus Black will not be receiving the ICS upgrade. The original upgrade announcement was a general statement issued from HQThu Jul 26 14:24:03 via Twitter for Mac

Now it turns out that the ICS update for both phones has been canceled - in Canada, at least. The statement doesn't make it entirely clear if this is a country-specific thing or if all Optimus 2X and Black phones will remain stuck on Gingerbread.
